Business Case Initiative

Business Case in Acre, Maranha, Amapa, Mato Grosso & Para, Brazil

In Brazil, CDP as a consortium member leads the Business Case activities under the following strategic approach: Mainstream corporate, subnational, and investor contributions to landscape and jurisdictional level outcomes into global environmental standards.

About Brazil

Situation

In Brazil, changes in land use from deforestation and agriculture constituted 52% and 24%, respectively, of the country’s total emissions during the period from 2000 to 2020.

Most emissions are attributed to the production and consumption of agricultural commodities, which drive deforestation and ecosystem conversion.

Beyond the socio-environmental consequences, businesses and investors face significant risks, as forest-based commodities are integral components of countless globally traded products, permeating the supply chains of numerous global and local organizations.

Actual risks

In 2022, 45 Brazilian companies reported to CDP, all with operations in places where approximately 80% of forest loss and an estimated 15% of global greenhouse gas emissions is attributed to the production of commodities.

If Amazonian Forest land continues to be threatened, Brazil will increasingly experience longer-lasting droughts, potentially resulting in annual agricultural losses of up to US$422 million in Brazil alone.

The Business Case

The Brazilian states Pará, Amapá, Mato Grosso, Maranhão, and Acre currently report to CDP on forest, biodiversity, and climate-related issues through their respective state environmental secretariats. CDP recognizes these engagements as opportunities to enhance the scope and depth of disclosures, encompassing diverse landscape scenarios.

Business Case aims to actively engage with companies operating within the region, establishing a standardized framework for comparing the sustainability needs of these states with those of corporations reporting through CDP.

These selected states are pivotal sourcing areas for global companies operating in commodity sectors such as cattle, timber, and soy.

Activities

To achieve Business Case goals in Brazil, CDP implements activities through three components:

Disclosing Landscape and Jurisdictional Approaches
Supply chain sourcing and investments directed to local landscape partnerships
Financing landscape-scale activities through Governments
